Meet Donegal Relocator Niamh McLaughlin

Donegal has always held a special place in the heart of Gaelic footballer Niamh, whose father hails from the county and made sure that she grew up with a deep and active connection with Donegal. Having spent her college years in Newcastle, going on to forge a career in Dublin as a respected name in medicine and sport alike, it was the COVID-19 pandemic that for Niamh, like many of us, brought about a reflection on what was truly important in life.

Recognising the wealth of education and career opportunities that Donegal now has to offer, the 29-year-old, who was named 2022 TG4 Senior Players’ Player of the Year, is proud to have made the move and to now call it home. When she’s not out on the pitch representing her club and county at the highest level of the sport she’s so passionate about, she enjoys taking time out with friends and family on one of Donegal’s many amazing walks or with a hot cup of joe at Nine Hostages in Manorcunningham.

What’s something you can find in Donegal that you can’t find anywhere else?

The views and scenery are completely unique to Donegal. There are endless beautiful places to see and explore all around the county.

What would you say are the top 5 most important things in deciding where to live?

In no particular order…

Your work/life balance - whatever your hobbies and interests are!

Are you content and happy at work? Will there be continued personal and professional development opportunities where you are?

Being able to live as comfortably as possible from a financial point of view - cost of living, rent, house prices etc.

Support networks, family and friends.

Being happy and comfortable where you are.

What advice would you give someone curious about moving to Donegal?

Donegal is becoming so diverse and is always developing in all aspects of study, culture, sports, the outdoors, food and socialising. It is now able to offer everything that a bigger city or country can but with the beauty of its views, outdoors, and its active, healthy lifestyle.
