Tip O'Neill Irish Diaspora Awards 2026 honour Kate Barton and Brendan 'Tiny' Vaughan

The achievements, generosity and enduring spirit of the Irish diaspora were celebrated this evening as the 2026 Tip O'Neill Irish Diaspora Awards took place at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel, Buncrana.

Hosted by Donegal County Council, the awards brought together members of the O'Neill family, elected representatives, business leaders, community organisations, past recipients and guests from Ireland and across the globe for a memorable evening dedicated to recognising the remarkable contribution of Ireland's global community.

Named in honour of the late Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill Jr., the legendary Speaker of the United States House of Representatives whose family roots lie in Inishowen, the awards recognise individuals whose achievements reflect the values of leadership, service, community and connection that have long defined the Irish diaspora.

This year's recipients, Kate Barton and Brendan "Tiny" Vaughan, were honoured for two very different but equally inspiring journeys.

As Global Chief Executive Officer of Dentons, the world's largest global law firm, Kate Barton has reached the highest levels of international business leadership. Throughout her distinguished career she has led global organisations, championed innovation and supported numerous philanthropic and educational initiatives, becoming an outstanding example of Irish leadership and influence on the world stage.

Brendan "Tiny" Vaughan, a native of Carrigart, Co. Donegal, was recognised for a lifetime of community service and charitable endeavour. From establishing the Donegal Hospice Calendar in memory of his mother to spearheading fundraising campaigns that have supported families, charities, emergency services and communities in times of need, Brendan's dedication has touched countless lives both at home and abroad.

Addressing the gathering, Minister of State Charlie McConalogue said:

"Tonight we celebrate two remarkable individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution in very different ways. Kate Barton and Brendan Vaughan embody many of the qualities for which the Irish diaspora is renowned across the world: leadership, generosity, resilience and a deep commitment to community. Their achievements remind us that while Irish people may travel far from home, the values that shape us remain constant. We are proud to recognise their contribution and proud to call them part of our global Irish family."

Throughout the evening, speakers reflected on the importance of the Irish diaspora to Donegal and to Ireland, highlighting the enduring bonds that connect communities across continents and generations.

The night ceremony also celebrated the continued success of the Tip O'Neill Irish Diaspora Awards themselves. Since their establishment in 2012, the awards have become a respected celebration of diaspora achievement, recognising individuals from the worlds of business, public service, culture, sport, philanthropy and community leadership.

Guests were also welcomed from among the growing family of previous recipients, many of whom returned to Donegal for the occasion. Additional guests included the Honorary Consul General to the State of Indiana Kevin Charles Murray and this years judges from Disrupt by the Sea, highlighting the strong and lasting relationships that have developed through the awards programme over the past fourteen years.

As the formal proceedings concluded, the evening continued with music from local Donegal Musicians Crampsey & Co, the celebration providing an opportunity for guests from near and far to reconnect and celebrate the rich contribution of the Global Irish Community

The 2026 Tip O'Neill Irish Diaspora Awards served as a powerful reminder that while the Irish story is told in every corner of the world that story often focuses on home. The stories often remain deeply rooted in community, heritage and a sense of belonging.

Through their achievements and service, Kate Barton and Brendan "Tiny" Vaughan have added another distinguished chapter to that story.
