Where can you study?

BIM National Fisheries College, Greencastle

This is a specialist seafood and fisheries training centre which is run by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (Ireland’s Seafood Development Agency). It aims to support those working in the fishing, seafood and fish farming industries. Some of the courses are grant-aided.

Greencastle Fisheries College offers courses in Marine Engineering, Skipper and Crew Training, Safety Training and Communications. Programmes range from short skills-based courses to QQI and NFQ courses right up to diploma level. For example, BIM teams up with Carlow IT to provide a Higher Diploma in Business in Aquabusiness at NFQ Level 8.

Courses for seafood processors and retailers offer training in food safety, seafood hygiene management and retail development. There’s an innovative Green Seafood Business Programme which offers participants the chance to make savings through greater efficiencies in your seafood business and create a greener environment.

Other specialist areas include the QQI Level 6 Commercial Diver Training course – which is distinctly different from recreational diving qualifications. It provides Commercial SCUBA Diver and Surface Supplied Diving training. Their Mid Management Programme is run in partnership with IBEC and it offers a range of short course and accredited programmes suited to the needs of the seafood industry.
