The opportunities for Donegal to strengthen its position as a leading hub for Aquatech and Marine Engineering were highlighted at the Build the Blue Economy: Aquatech and Engineering Breakfast Workshop held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Letterkenny on 9 September.
Bringing together businesses, industry experts and stakeholders, the workshop explored how Donegal and the wider North West can build on their strong maritime heritage, engineering expertise, and export success to capitalise on growing opportunities in the global Blue Economy.
Speakers included Damien Toner, Aquatech Manager at BIM, Catherine McManus, Operations Director of MOWI Ireland, David Cunningham, Managing Director of Cunningham Covers, and Thomas Havlin, Founder and CEO of Seabound Engineering. Drawing on their experience across aquaculture, marine engineering, and international trade, they highlighted the region's growing reputation for innovation, manufacturing excellence, and marine expertise.
The workshop was organised by Donegal County Council under the auspices of the Donegal Blue Economy Working Group as part of ongoing efforts to grow the Aquatech sector in Donegal. By bringing together businesses, industry experts and stakeholders, the event provided an opportunity to explore emerging trends, share industry insights, and identify pathways for collaboration, innovation, and export growth.
Speakers highlighted Donegal's unique advantage, including its deep understanding of the marine environment, strong marine manufacturing capability, and longstanding export relationships with international aquaculture markets. Discussions also highlighted the significant opportunity for Donegal and the North West to become a centre for Aquatech and marine innovation. Businesses across the region are already exporting world-class products and services to international markets including Norway, Chile, and Canada, while developing sustainable seafood production, marine engineering, and energy-efficient technologies. Speakers noted that the region's ability to deliver bespoke solutions for customers worldwide provides a solid foundation for future growth.
The importance of continued collaboration between industry, education and government was also emphasised, with opportunities such as the planned Ocean Innovation Centre at ATU Killybegs identified as important assets in supporting innovation, research, and skills development.
