As County Donegal prepares to welcome the 2026 Tip O'Neill Irish Diaspora Award recipients this September, one of this year's honourees, Kate Barton, exemplifies the global influence, community spirit and enduring connection to Ireland that the awards seek to celebrate.
The Tip O’Neill Irish Diaspora Award was established in 2012 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the late Tip O'Neill, and to celebrates members of the Global Irish Community whose personal achievements in their chosen fields have brought distinction to their professions, communities and Irish heritage. Kate's personal story and commitment to service embody those ideals.
Kate Barton is the Global CEO of Dentons, the world's largest global law firm, and is recognised internationally for her leadership and commitment to creating opportunities for others. Throughout her career, she has combined professional success with a deep dedication to philanthropy, education and community development, making a meaningful impact on the lives of countless individuals and communities.
Alongside her leadership responsibilities, Kate has devoted significant time and energy to charitable and educational causes. She supports a range of organisations focused on education, social mobility and community empowerment, including The Ireland Funds, the All Stars Project, the Shanti Bhavan Children's Project and Catalyst. Through these initiatives, she has helped advance opportunities for young people and underserved communities, reflecting a lifelong belief in the importance of giving back.
Central to Kate's story is her Irish heritage. As the granddaughter of four Irish emigrants who settled in Boston, Massachusetts, she has spoken of the values passed down through generations: resilience, hard work, optimism, humour and a strong sense of community. Those values have guided her leadership and shaped her commitment to supporting others.
Speaking following the announcement of her selection for the 2026 Tip O'Neill Irish Diaspora Award, Kate said:
"As the granddaughter of four grandparents who emigrated from Ireland to Boston, Massachusetts, I am deeply honoured to receive this year's Tip O'Neill Irish Diaspora Award. Their legacy of resilience, storytelling, and humour has shaped who I am and has guided me throughout my leadership roles in professional service as well as my philanthropic endeavours. I am grateful to carry forward the values they instilled in me and to celebrate the enduring impact of my Irish heritage."
Announcing the 2026 recipients, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr. Gary Doherty, said:
"The Tip O'Neill Irish Diaspora Awards provide us with a valuable annual opportunity to recognise exceptional individuals whose achievements have brought distinction not only to themselves, but also to Ireland and our global diaspora.”
Kate's recognition is a reflection not only of her achievements as a global leader, but also her dedication to philanthropy, education and community service. Her story highlights the positive impact the Global Irish Community continues to have across the world, driving success but also using that success to create opportunities for others, give something back and improve the lives of others.
As Donegal looks forward to welcoming Kate, her family and guests to Buncrana in September, her journey serves as a powerful reminder of the lasting links between Ireland and the millions worldwide who proudly trace their roots to this island.
The 2026 Tip O'Neill Irish Diaspora Awards will take place at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel, Buncrana, on Friday, 25 September 2026. Tickets available via Eventbrite.
