Donegal County Council played a key role in two significant events in Glasgow last week, reinforcing the county’s deep ties with its Diaspora and its ongoing commitment to sport and culture.
On Friday afternoon, the Donegal County Council delegation, including Leas-Cathaoirleach Cllr. Jimmy Kavanagh, Director of Economic Development Garry Martin, Donegal County Council Diaspora Ambassador Packie Bonner, Diaspora Officer Eoin Leonard, and Heritage Officer Joseph Gallagher, attended a reception at Glasgow City Chambers hosted by Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren. This event served to further strengthen the longstanding relationship between Donegal and Glasgow, highlighting the shared cultural and historical ties between the two regions.
Later that evening, the delegation participated in a fundraiser at Celtic Park’s Kerrydale Suite in support of the redevelopment of Glasgow’s Pearse Park Centre. The event, which featured an auction of high-profile items, was organised by Scotland GAA President Peter Mossey and Chairperson Jenn Treacy. Also present at the event was Irish Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Mr. Martin Fraser, who offered his full support for the initiative.
On Saturday morning, the Donegal Masters GAA team took on Tyrone Masters in a thrilling match, attended by members of the Irish Consulate team, including Consul General Jerry O'Donovan and Vice-Consul General Andrea Wickham-Moriarty, alongside other distinguished guests including Donegal GAA Chairperson Mary Coughlan.
Attention then turned back to Celtic Park on Saturday afternoon, where the delegation was delighted to attend Celtic’s 3-0 victory over Hearts, capping off an action-packed weekend.
