The ShopLK initiative, supported by local councillors and Donegal County Council, underscores the myriad benefits of local shopping.
By promoting a “shop local” ethos, the campaign has significantly contributed to the local economy in several ways. Supporting local shopping creates not just full-time employment opportunities but also the essential casual and part-time jobs for young people and students. It also has the added benefit of ensuring that money stays within the community, bolstering local businesses and services.
Speaking at the 20th Anniversary Party, held at An Grianan Theatre, Claire McDonough, President of Letterkenny Chamber said, “Way back in 2004 I don’t think anyone could have envisaged the success story that is ShopLK. The brand has become synonymous with local shopping in Letterkenny, the urban centre of Donegal. Over the last 20 years the brand may have changed but the message has remained. She went on to thank everyone past and present who has worked on and with ShopLK, “ShopLK is oficially the biggest town gift card scheme in Ireland and last year it sold €5.7m worth of cards, this could only be done with the dedication of the people involved in Letterkenny Chamber.
Toni Forrester CEO of Letterkenny Chamber thanked the Council for their ongoing support, “In the days of the Urban Council, the Councillors suggested a retail promotion initiative, this support was invaluable in growing the brand, it enabled us to run events that encouraged local shopping, allowed us to advertise Letterkenny as a retail destination more effectively and it worked. The ShopLK brand stands for local shopping and the Gift Card sales continue to increase year on year.”
She continued “ShopLK is a celebration of the rich retail environment we have in Letterkenny and all who use the gift cards are helping to reinforce the shop local message. ShopLK has stood the test of time and we look forward to the next 20 years.”
Acknowledging the achievements over 20years Councillor Gerry McMonagle, Mayor of Letterkenny/Milford MD said “The Council is delighted to be associated with ShopLK, it was important that we as councillors supported this initiative and we are pleased to see how it has grown. As well as the sales of gift cards it is the brand that underpins Halloween Fest, Busking Fest and is always encouraging people to stay local.”
