After yesterday’s announcement by the Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan on the National Transport Authority’s plan to spend €289 million euro on active travel infrastructure across 2022, it has been announced that 32 Donegal projects will be involved, totalling €5.596 million in funding for the county.
The NTA has said the infrastructure upgrades will encourage active travel, improving the quality of life for people in Ireland as well as helping to reduce carbon emissions.
Speaking at the announcement, Minister Eamon Ryan commented:
"It is great to see our investment in active travel starting to bear fruit. I want us to now accelerate delivery of sustainable transport modes as we come out of the majority of COVID restrictions. It is vital that we do not allow a return to gridlock as we come out of the pandemic. We need to use the switch to remote working as an opportunity to reallocate road space to create a safer and more efficient transport system.
The Donegal projects announced as part of the plan include the Letterkenny Cathedral One Way project, the Donegal Town Local Transport Plan, and pedestrian bridges in Culdaff and Burnfoot.
Welcoming the announcement, local minister Charlie McConalogue commented:
“This funding announcement today for Donegal walking and cycling infrastructure is much welcomed and important funding. The works will help to rejuvenate our towns and villages and make them safer places to live in and work in.”
