The musical is inspired by the patchwork quilt Love Across The Waves created by the Arranmore and Tir Boghaine Women's Groups. It explores life in Donegal during the early 19th century, focusing on the romance between Matthew Lyons from Teelin and Nuala Green from Arranmore Island. Their relationship develops in a time when arranged matches were common, but they choose to fall in love independently. A key plot point involves Nuala arranging a bonfire to signal her parents’ blessing for their engagement, which Matthew must see from a distance “at the end of the day” to know their future together.

The story also incorporates historical events such as the Bruckless drownings and reflects the economic conditions of the era, providing a rich cultural and historical context for the narrative attheendofthedaythemusical.com
