Gartan OEDC is based in a stunning setting on the shores of Gartan Lough in Donegal’s highlands. So, it’s the ideal location for kayak and sail training, as well as mountain climbing and other outdoor activities they cover. In association with Donegal ETB’s Further Education and Training Service, Gartan offers an Outdoor Activity Instructor Traineeship programme. The course runs from September to July each year and operates 5 days a week for 45 weeks.
The traineeship covers instructors training in sailing, kayaking, mountain skills, powerboat operation, windsurfing, and dinghy operation. In addition, it includes first aid and emergency rescue care and child welfare and protection in sport. Certifying bodies include the Irish Sailing Association and Canoeing Ireland. This is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Social Fund, and includes training allowances for eligible students.
As well as this excellent traineeship course, Gartan provides courses and programmes to colleges and universities. Courses vary from team building days to multi-activity residential programmes to tailor-made programmes to suit specific needs. Courses and programmes are coordinated and delivered by qualified instructors from governing bodies in their fields.
