Green Economy

Donegal supports Ireland’s national targets to reduce waste, increase renewable energy, and to protect our stunning environment. Wind power and biomass crops currently represent our greatest renewable energy resources in the county. Through its’ own work and its’ work with LEADER projects, Donegal County Council emphasises the need to promote the following measures:

  • increase water protection and conservation
  • pollution reduction
  • low impact methods for development
  • facilitation of native species
  • sustainable waste management
  • increased energy efficiency
  • use of renewable energy

Work is currently ongoing to meet the 2045 target for the North West City Region (encompassing neigbhouring Derry City and Strabane Council) to become carbon neutral by 2045.

Donegal has a high compliance rate for drinking water quality. In terms of our seas, we have the second highest number of Blue Flag beaches in the State. We have a growing Cleantech sector of businesses. These companies work to reduce negative environmental impacts through significant energy efficiency, sustainable use of resources, or environmental protection activities.
