Donegal ICT

ERNACT (European Regions Network for the Application of Communications Technology) is a cross border technology network initiated  by Donegal County and Derry City councils. The network has since grown to include eight other European regions. Its main role is to help both Councils stimulate the uptake of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the North West Gateway Initiative area. This includes broadband, internet services, e-government and mobile applications.

ERNACT also develops and shapes ICT partnerships with organisations in other European regions, to provide projects, funding and access to know-how to help make the North West Ireland cross border area a more outward facing and technologically advanced region. It has a strong record of achievement in interregional project development and management, successfully securing some 50 Euro million from EU innovation programmes for 26 projects across 130 European regions.

In September 2012, EU Commissioner, Máire Geoghegan Quinn, stated that ERNACT was a very good example of how the European Commission has successfully supported local and regional authorities to be a catalyst for innovation within their region and to network with their peers across Europe.  It demonstrated the capacity of local, regional and city authorities to establish and manage complex networked innovation systems that span European regions and Member States”.

Looking forward:

ERNACT is focused on making a successful transition to the new EU programming period 2014 – 2020 by:

* Planning Digital Agenda: related Territorial Cooperation projects that support Smart Specialisation: priorities in the ERNACT regions

* Open the experience and collaboration possibilities of the network to more European regions
